CULMEA Festival Brings Award-Winning Films and Workshops to Brașov for Young Audiences

Between 16-20 October, in Brasov, the second edition of CULMEA: Film and Environmental Education will take place.

Short films focusing on the climate crisis and environmental issues, premiering in Brașov

During the week children and young people are expected at Olimpia - Museum of Mountain Sports and Tourism for a selection of short films thought for Kindergarten classes, schoolchildrenand high school students. The short films in CULMEA program have been selected and awarded at renowned international film festivals, including Cinekid Amsterdam, Giffoni Film Festival or CineJunior - the largest children's film festival in France. Screenings during the week will be followed by discussions with the public on environmental topics raised in the films, moderated by experienced educators.

At the same time, there will be workshops for different age categories: ventriloquism shows, drawing workshops, painting or quilting, giving children the opportunity to express their emotions through artistic activities. The entrance ticket to the short films is 5 lei for children, 10 lei for adults and the workshop fee is 10 lei. Tickets allow visits to the Olimpia Museum and teachers are encouraged to come with the children's classes. All tickets can be purchased from eventboek.

Special events for Brașov communities

This year's edition also opens the program to adults through dedicated events. Thursday, October 17, at Olimpia - Museum of Mountain Sports and Tourism, from 17:30 the screening of the film will take place Life Among Wolves(France, 2023, directed by Jean-Michel Bertrand, 89 min, 12 years +) featuring the adventures of renowned nature photographer Jean-Michel Bertrand who lived alongside a community of wolves to capture their lives in European forests. The screening is followed by a discussion with the Conservation Carpathia team on the topic of native wolves.

Also on Thursday 17 October, the community at the intersection of culture, environment and activism is invited to ZVON to meet the team of CULMEA festival and the Climate Lottery project at an event Gathering sociales. The series of short films on environmental themes made by the Civic Diaspora Berlin will be screened for the first time, and participants will have the opportunity to learn more about how interest in climate and cinema intertwine. Who knows, maybe collaboration ideas or new projects also come up!

Friday, October 18, from 15:00, the senior audience is invited by the SuperGrandparents community to the delicious French film Love at Little Fire(France, 2022, directed by Anh Hung Tran, 135 min, 12 years +), winner of the Award for Best Director at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. A love story that takes place in a refined kitchen, and that reminds us of the joy of food, when we pay attention to the tastes and ingredients.

Feature films for children, awarded at major festivals, at Cinema Modern


On the weekend of October 19 — 20, the audience is invited to the Modern cinema to bring back the curiosity and enthusiasm of children in the renovated halls of the former neighborhood cinema. Among the films in the CULMEA selection are The Fleets — Adventures with Pettson and Findus(Germany, Luxembourg, 2022, directed by Ali Samadi Ahadi, Markus Dietrich, 81 min, 6 years +, dubbed in Romanian) - a great adventure with three heroes from the book series” Pettson and Findus” who must find a new home where they can live again in chaos. The film screening is followed by a reading workshop from the Pettson series with actress Mihaela Alexandru.

For the school audience, the selection includes COCO FARM(Canada, 2023, directed by Sébastien Gagné, 87 min, 10 years +) Grand Prize winner at the New York International Children's Film Festival 2023, in the selection of numerous children's film festivals around the world. Max, a 12-year-old boy with an entrepreneurial spirit, is forced to close the business and move to his own country. But he does not lose hope: when he discovers chickens in the abandoned barn of his cousin Charles, a new business plan arises.
