CULMEA Festival starts, 2nd edition

CULMEA festival, 2nd edition

We have prepared some of the latest and award-winning films for children and adolescents, which address environmental themes, presented for the first time, as well as animations and documentaries about the most pressing environmental issues of the moment. We also have Discussions with the publicafter projections, moderated by specialists, but also special events for the Brașov public, children's workshops, artistic performancesand meetings with special guests from environmental organizations, environmental activists, educators or cultural managers. Wednesday, October 16, the festival opens at Olimpia - Museum of Mountain Sports and Tourism- with the first screenings of short filmsdesigned in dedicated texts for classes of daycare, schoolchildrenand high school students. Screenings take place between 09:30 and 15:00, and after the screening teachers or parents can sign them up for workshops and performances, such as Collisor - the dragon educator, a ventriloquism show on ecological themes.

Screenings for children and young people continue Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18all at Olimpia - Museum of Mountain Sports and Tourism. The projections are accompanied by painting workshops, quilted wool or robotics. Also on Thursday the creative community in Brașov is invited to a Social Gathering at ZVON - Cultural Dialogue, where the CULMEA team will be in dialogue with the team that created the series of short films Climate Lottery- a series of short, informative (and fun) videos, through which various topics related to the climate crisis are explored: from what Romania could look like in 50 years, to who are responsible for the climate crisis and why recycling is not the only solution to overconsumption.

Special screenings include watching an excellent nature documentary Thursday, October 17, from 17:30, let Olimpia - Museum of Mountain Sports and Tourism. After being extinct for almost 80 years, wolves are gradually repopulating Europe. Famed nature photographer Jean-Michel Bertrand, known for following a community of wolves for three years, embarks on a fascinating cinematic quest through European forests in the documentary Life Among Wolves(France, 2023, directed by Jean-Michel Bertrand, 89 min, 12 years +). The screening is followed by a discussion with Costin Enache, wildlife monitoring expertConservation Carpathia.

Friday, October 18, from 18:00, let Brașov Art Museum projection takes place The Untold Story Of Seeds(USA, 2016, directed by Jon Betz, Taggart Siegel, 94 min, 12 years +), an Emmy-nominated film for best nature documentary, with numerous awards and selections in festivals around the world. As 94% of our seed varieties have gone extinct in the last century, we follow the story of seed keepers protecting 12,000-year-old food heritage. As chemical companies control most of the seeds on the planet, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed holders are protecting humanity's most prized resource and reviving an entire seed-related crop. Artista Aura Petrascuwill achieve a post-projection performancein the context of his photo-video series “Don't play with your food, let me do it for you”.

The weekend brings a selection of feature films for all ageslet Cinema Moderneand workshops and activities to animate the audience. Among the titles we mention Thabo and the case of the rhinoceros(Germany, 2023, directed by Mara Eibl-Eibesfeldt, 97 min, 8 years +, dubbed in Romanian) - an adventure with rhinos and poachers that will open the appetite for the protection of wild animals and natural areas. The film is followed by a discussion with Nicoleta Marin, coordinator Network for Urban Nature.

Another title with an impressive track record is COCO FARM(Canada, 2023, directed by Sébastien Gagné, 87 min, 10 years +)awarded or nominated in most children's film festivals around the world. The film tells the story of Max, a 12-year-old boy with an entrepreneurial spirit. When he is forced to close the business and move to the country with his father, he finds a new business opportunity: a chicken farm in the abandoned barn of his cousin Charles.

We gather at ZVON the community at the intersection ofculture x climate x activism. It is a perfect opportunity to get to know the CULMEA festival team and the Climatic Lottery project, to watch for the first time a series of Romanian short films on environmental topics and to talk about how interest in climate and cinematography are intertwined.
